What is a terrane?
A terrane is a piece of or a fragment of crustal material formed on, or broken off from, one tectonic plate and accreted to another plate. A terrane has its own unique geologic history. You live on an example of this geologic feature. Remember the evidence of coastal fossils in Saratoga, NY and in Lake Champlain? New England became part of North America as two terranes formed and were "glued" onto the continent.
