 Xining, China Earthquake

May 22, 1927

     

     The city of Xining lies on the Huangshui River and is located on the Eastern part of Quinghai Province, also located at 31.62 latitude and 101.77 longitude, and the city has a total of 350 square kilometers of land[1] Killing 40,900 people at the time of the Earthquake; some sources listing the deathcount as high as 200,000[2]. With a magnitude of 7.9 on the Ritcher scale it is known as the 5th deadliest Earthquake recorded in the history of the Earth[3].

 

 

      

     

     Not only was the 1927 earthquake deadly, but also caused land cracking and many other harmful destruction's. Including, damage to over 500 schools and office buildings (some being completely destroyed). In result of the Earthquakes many people lost their occupations. Not only were the people killed but also over 250,000 livestock were killed in the disaster[4]. The Earthquake was linked to another earthquake in Gansu occurring in 1920, (measure 8.6 and was the cause of 200,00 deaths.)[5]

    

      The type of boundary that Xining, China is on is a convergent  boundary, which means the type of stress is compression. Also, the plate that Xining is on is the Indian plate and  slamming into the Eurasian plate. This area in China experience's quite a few deadly earthquakes.[6]

 

     A recent earthquake that was very harmful, was May 6th, 2008. This earthquake had a magnitude of 7.9 as well but killed 70,000 people and leaving over 18,000 people missing, (most likely due to the more populated time period; in 1927 there wasn't as many people living in the area.)[7] The 1976 earthquake in the same area encouraged people to build more strong structures, but there was still a lot of damage done. Including, the destruction of schools, and the flooding of many towns which caused landslides in the towns. Also, more recently there was an earthquake in 2009, November 10th in Xining China that measured 6.3 on the Richter scale. There was no report of any deaths due to the earthquake, but there was some cracking in mud houses[8].
